THE GRAND OLD MAN OF FINNISH POSTER ART
Erik Bruun (1926-) is a merry rascal who everyone gets along with. He is the grand old man of poster art in Finland and the question is if anyone else has done more than he has to attract travellers to Finland.
Armed with a degree from The Central School for Arts and Crafts, he proceeded to ensure that the poster occupied a central place in Finnish advertising.
During his long career, his passion has always been the street poster. Bruun’s rule of thumb is, as Ulla Aartomaa writes in the book Come to Finland that a good street poster should be able to convey its message to the passengers of a passing tram: “His method of designing a street poster is brilliant in all its simplicity: the initial sketch must be able to fit onto the cover of a box of matches and thus all unnecessary detail is removed.”
