Maija Isola created the Unikko pattern, an international icon of pattern design, in 1964. Marimekko founder Armi Ratia believed that it was impossible to capture the true essence of flowers in a pattern. For this reason, flowers had not previously been included in Marimekko's collections. Maija Isola therefore designed the Unikko pattern as an abstract interpretation rather than a photorealistic reproduction of a floral theme. Today, Unikko is a powerful symbol of joy and creativity and an important part of Marimekko's design identity.
